Wed Night Race 5 Summer Series July 30th 2003

The first week back from Whidbey and already we look to be into the August winds. The wind begins to fill in slowly, and after a short postponement we race in a building northerly at the end of a strong flood. Even though Lunch Box and Aliens are out for Nationals, Turkey and Dog struggle for crew. Kudos out to Surfer Girl for sailing tonight and Whidbey while also getting ready for Nationals.

There's a good fight to the windward mark with Bad Dog rounding just inside of Turkey and the others close behind. The Dog tries to hold the Bird up (to keep them from coming down) and the Bird bizarrely responds, "you need to give me room and opportunity."
Bad Dog gives up that strategy and inside gybes for the lead. Surfer Girl breathes down Turkey's neck on this run. Bad Dog looks good until she goes to the wrong mark, losing the Bird and almost the Girl.
Realising her mistake, she limps over to the correct mark.

Wild Turkey rounds the leeward mark just in front of Bad Dog, but spends the long beat in this twice-around extending to a healthy lead. Similarly, Bad Dog extends her lead on Surfer Girl. Wyewacket gives Surfer Girl a fight for a while, but this ends with the Girl extending a nice lead.

Like so many Wednesday nights, the real battle is fought on those first two legs. Wild Turkey did well, with great upwind speed, and won the race, followed by Bad Dog, Surfer Girl, and Wyewacket.
